Our coach hire Sydney service picks up where our minibuses leave off. Sydney Bus Hire is best known for 12, 20 and 24 seat minibuses, but when the headcount passes 24, or the trip calls for luggage bays and reclining seats, we supply midi coaches with 28 and 33 seats and full-size coaches with 48 and 57 seats, each with a professional driver. You get the same planning help and the same people on the phone, just with a bigger vehicle at the kerb.
This page explains when a coach is the right call, which size to choose, and how to get an accurate quote for your trip. If you only need a few hours with a driver who stays with you between stops, see our coach charter page as well.
When to hire a coach instead of a minibus
A minibus is quick to load, easy to park and fits narrow streets. A coach wins in a few clear situations:
- Your group is bigger than 24. One coach is simpler than two or three minibuses: one driver, one pickup point, and everyone arriving at the same moment.
- There is real luggage. Undercarriage bays take suitcases, sports kit and boxes of conference material, so the aisle and seats stay clear.
- The trip is long. Reclining seats, overhead racks and personal air vents make a run to Canberra or the Hunter Valley far more comfortable.
- Someone needs to talk to the group. The onboard microphone lets a host, teacher or guide brief everyone on the way.
If your numbers are 24 or fewer, our 24 seater mini coach gives you coach-style seats in a smaller vehicle, and it is usually the better value.
Which coach size fits your group?
| Group size | Suggested vehicle | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 25 to 28 | 28 seat midi coach | Club outings, a full class, small wedding guest lists |
| 29 to 33 | 33 seat midi coach | Corporate teams, choirs, seniors groups with day bags |
| 34 to 48 | 48 seat coach | School year groups, larger weddings, conference delegates |
| 49 to 57 | 57 seat coach | The biggest single groups and long distance day trips |
Leave a few spare seats if anyone is carrying large bags or equipment inside, and tell us about wheelchairs or mobility aids early so we can match the right vehicle. You can compare every vehicle on our fleet page.
More than 57 people?
We combine vehicles. Two coaches, or a coach plus a 20 seater minibus, usually load and unload faster than one oversized booking, and they give you a backup option if part of the group needs to leave early.
What Sydney groups hire coaches for
Airport and cruise transfers
Arriving tour groups, sporting teams and conference delegates often land with a suitcase each. A coach collects everyone from Sydney Airport or the cruise terminals at Circular Quay and White Bay and takes them straight to the hotel. Read more on our airport transfers page.
Weddings
For guest lists in the forties and fifties, one coach from the hotel to the ceremony and on to the reception keeps the timeline tight. Smaller bridal party runs can stay in a minibus. See our wedding transfers for planning tips.
Events and functions
Award nights, corporate functions and sporting fixtures run more smoothly when guests arrive together. For larger events we can plan a sequence of coach and minibus runs so arrivals are spread out. Our event transport page covers how we plan those nights.
School excursions and sport
Schools hire coaches for excursions, carnivals and interschool sport. Our drivers hold Working With Children Checks, and seatbelt-equipped coaches can be confirmed when you book. Teachers stay responsible for supervising students on board.
Day trips out of Sydney
The Blue Mountains, the Hunter Valley, the Southern Highlands and Canberra are popular coach days. Browse our day tours for ideas, or send us your own itinerary.
Coach hire, coach charter and bus hire: what is the difference?
People use these words loosely, so here is how we use them:
- Coach hire is booking a larger vehicle for your group, often for a set trip such as a transfer or a return run to an event.
- Coach charter books the coach and driver for a block of hours, with the driver staying with you between stops. See coach charter Sydney.
- Bus charter is the same idea in a minibus or mini coach, which suits most groups under 25. See bus charter Sydney.
- Bus hire is our everyday service: a minibus and driver sized to your group. Start on our bus hire Sydney home page.
Whichever word you search for, the quote works the same way. Tell us the plan and we recommend the vehicle and booking type that fits.
Planning your coach hire
Pickup and set-down points
Coaches need more room than minibuses to pull in safely. Many hotels, schools and venues have a coach bay or a set-down zone, so ask the venue and pass the details on. If there is no obvious spot, give us the address and we will suggest the nearest place a coach can stop without blocking traffic.
Timing
Allow extra time for loading a full coach, especially with luggage. Ten to fifteen minutes at a hotel pickup is realistic for a large group. For flights, ceremonies and kick-offs, build in a buffer for Sydney traffic at the time of day you are travelling.
Long days and driver breaks
On longer trips we build rest breaks into the plan for the driver and comfort stops for passengers. For very long days we may suggest an earlier start, a later finish or an overnight stay, and we will explain why.
On board
Every passenger must be seated with a seatbelt fastened where fitted. Water is fine on board; food and other drinks, including alcohol, are not permitted.
What every coach booking includes
- A professional driver who holds a Working With Children Check
- Fuel and the coach for the trip or hours you book
- Private use for your group, with no other passengers
- Seatbelt-equipped coaches, which can be confirmed when you book
- Undercarriage luggage space on full-size coaches

Coach hire FAQs
What size coaches can I hire through Sydney Bus Hire?
Midi coaches with 28 and 33 seats and full-size coaches with 48 and 57 seats. For smaller groups we use 12, 20 and 24 seat vehicles.
Do your coaches come with a driver?
Yes. Every coach is supplied with one of our professional drivers. We do not hire vehicles for self-drive.
Is a coach better value than two minibuses?
Often, once a group passes about 30 people, because you pay for one driver and one vehicle. Below that, a minibus or a 24 seater mini coach is usually the better choice. We will recommend whichever suits your trip.
Can the coach carry suitcases and sports equipment?
Yes. Full-size coaches have undercarriage bays for suitcases, kit bags and boxes. Let us know about bulky or unusual items when you ask for a quote.
Can we hire a coach for a one way trip?
Yes. Many coach bookings are one way or return transfers, such as hotel to venue or airport to hotel. If you need the driver to stay with you between stops, a coach charter is the better fit.
Are seatbelts fitted for school groups?
Seatbelt-equipped coaches can be confirmed when you book, and our drivers hold Working With Children Checks.
Can we eat or drink on the coach?
Water is fine. Food and other drinks, including alcohol, are not permitted on board.
How far ahead should we book a coach?
As early as you can, especially for school terms, wedding season and big event weekends, when coaches are in high demand. Short notice requests are worth a call, as we can sometimes help.
